Well, you need A LOT of tips.First of all, if its your first time in Mexico, I WOULD not recommend that you go to Mexico City. There are many reasons, one being that you are all alone and don't know the city very well. Don't get me wrong it is a beatifull place its just that for a person that has no idea where they are going, it can be dangerous. The city is huge, having a population of over 9 million and you don't want to accidentally end up in the wrong neighborhood because I promis you, you will come out bare nacked and bruised. The fact that it is so high up(elevation) may also be a factor. The hundreds of thousands of cars in the streets will also cause irritation the first time you visit. If you really want to go to Mexico City, I would suggest you get a friend to go with you because honestly, don't trust those cab drivers too much. I would suggest another city.
A great city to visit would be Morelia, Michoacan. I'm probably saying this because my parents are from here and I visit every summer so I'm probably a little bias. Anyways, Morelia is the capital of Michoacan. It has its urban and colonial influences seen throughout the city. Way smaller than Mexico City(about 700,000 people) it is much easier to get around. The historic center boasts the famous cathedral along with its other attractions such as the aqueducts and other temples. If your looking for nightlife, Morelia has that too. I would really recommend this city if your going to Mexico. If you would like more info you can email me at georgina.sanchez@sbcglobal.net Just use Wikipedia and type in Morelia to get some info.
As for airfare, expect to pay alot. Prices go WAY up in times of vacation as cause of all the people that visit. If you really want to visit this year I would suggest looking for tickets A.S.A.P. As for airlines, I would not recommend big name airlines such as Aeromexico or Mexicana simply because they are too expensive. If possible, I would recommend traveling to a border city such as Tijuana(I live in california so I prefer traveling from Tijuana) so the flight is not a international flight rather a national flight saving you a couple hundred. If traveling to a border city is not possible, then sorry, these overcharging airlines are the only solution. If going to the border is possible, I recommend AVIACSA, Volaris,AVOLAR. They are cheaper and get you to your destination. As for service, unless your traveling first class, no big name or small name airline will praise you at your feet. They will feed you onece and give you a drink once.
As for the language, that will be difficult. Manyu people will be able to understand you especially since Englisg is becoming more and more common in the world, however don't expect to be on the same page all the time. My suggestion, buy a book to translate english into spanish and vice versa. As far as currency, you probably know that Mexico uses pesos. My suggestion is to exchange at the airport so you don't have to worry about it. If you do run out of pesos, you can always go to the banks in Mexico which in cities are everywhere. If you cant get to a bank, many people will accept U.S dollars at 10 pesos per dollar. Right now the exchange rate is about 10.75 pesos per dollar, but the 10 pesos per dollar is what the people out in the streets(vendors, etc) will take.
Oh, and a word of advise. You will probably get sick. Not like dying sick, you'll probably just get a stomach ache and maybe vomit. This is just nature. I go to Mexico every summer and there has not been one summer where my stomach hurts for a couple of days and then I vommit. After that its all good. The reason being is that it is a different culture and your stomach will not be used to it. I don't mean its dirty, its that your just not used to it. As far as the water, If your eating out in the streets(corner snackshops) I would recommend you have bottled water or soda etc. If your in a restaurant its okay. If your going to eat out of the corner snackshops ( like the ones they have in NYC) look for a one that has a lot of people. If it has got a lot of people then it is good. Hope this helps. Sorry that it was kind of long, just wanted to help.
