Well sure it was imperialism but at least one could argue that the area was within our sphere of influence and that adverse events there could directly affect us. We wouldn't want, for instance, violent anarchy on our southern borders or on nearby outlying islands, or threatening the Panama Canal.
What the hell we are doing by remaining in Afghanistan and 140 other countries at the moment defies explanation, at least to me. |
