Default Is it easy (and cheap) to travel across Mexico by bus ?

My girlfriend and I are going to Mexico in early November. We have planned to cross half the country : from Mexico to Puebla, to Oaxaca, to Chiapas, to Merida, to Cancun. How easy is it to travel with buses and is it cheap ? Do you know where I can take the bus in each of these cities ? How much does it cost ?

Please help me out.

Serious replies only.

Thank you for your answers,

Nicolas, Brussels, Belgium.

Bus service in Mexico is outstanding, and inexpensive. It is far easier to travel through Mexico by bus than the US. The buses are also high quality, mostly Mercedes. Each city and town will have a central bus terminal. It would be impossible to tell you the cost without an exact itinerary.

So much of Mexico travels by bus that they have buses 24 hrs a day, every few hours between most city's. Often more than one an hour on the most traveled routs.

Roger is right, it's quite easy and inexpensive to travel by bus in Mexico. There is a bus line called "ADO" that travels to all of the cities you mentioned. I am giving you a link to their ticket service so you can see costs and itineraries.

www.ticketbus.com.mx

About the bus terminals:
In Mexico City there are several terminals, buses for Puebla leave mostly from the TAPO terminal which is very well known and very close from Mexico City Intnl. Airport.
In all of the other cities there is usually just one ADO bus terminal.

I hope this helps, and enjoy your trip!!

i agree with the first two...although the places you are going are especially risky and not as safe by bus as most travel in mexico. but that doens't mean you shouldn't go...i'm just sayiing, don't expect seamless travel. the bus might not be quite as nice as other buses, and the roads are curvy and slow going. have fun!!

oh yes, when i travel by bus, i always carry something of a little value in my pocket. such as a watch, ring, or some money. the reason for this is...if the bus ever was to get robbed, i want to have something of value that i can pull out quickly, and hand over. if you are ready to give up what you have...then they'll take it and move on...ignoring what might be of real value in your suitcase!! and decreasing the chance of a dangerous confrontation. i'm not trying to scare you, and i've never been on a bus that was robbed. but i do know people who have, and it's always best to be prepared, especially when travelling south of mexico city.
