Default moving to Central/South America-limited budget?

If you wanted to move to a Central/South American location with very limited capital, but a steady income of at least $2k a month, but require consistent high-speed Internet, what would be the best plan? Where would you go and how would you 'set up house'? As in finding the best location, housing, etc. Let's consider selling most everything you own so you have a little extra cash with no rding fees.
My husband and I both? Where do you live?

I'd get a copy of South America on a Shoestring from Lonely planet (I guess there must be one on Central America), as a point of reference. Overall I think those guides cater to all travelers, but especially to the budget oriented traveler with long stays.

My two cents, I'd pick Colombia, if you can get past all the non-sense negative propaganda, but most foreigners know little about the country and only recently more and more backpackers are moving towards discovering Colombia.

For a more "established" location for a "visiting" foreigner, I'd pick Argentina. I keep hearing the USD is very strong over there with the exchange rate.

I am sure that USD$2k a month will serve you properly in most South American countries with high speed internet as your main privilege. Don't expect lots of luxury, but you can certainly live comfortably.

Onet thing - I'd avoid capital cities as they of course tend to be more expensive, but look for alternative hubs with cheaper life costs and simpler life styles.

Uruguay - definitely Uruguay - North America/European standard of living, culture, etc and you can live on $1K /month. Check out Montevideo or Punta del Este if you like cities, otherwise lots of country/ocean front areas available. Safest country in South America.
