This autumn I intend to go to Mexico City for two weeks. I was also considering visiting colleagues in Toluca. I have been th Mexico City a few times and i felt safe. I have never driven outside the city and I am concerned about safety especially since the recent surge in violence..
Also is there reliable public transportation between the two cities. |

Communication between Mexico City and Toluca is frequent, I mean, Toluca has like about 2 million people, and is very very close from Mexico City, like 30-40 minutes from Santa Fe, so transportation is constant and frequent. There are buses, you can take any bus that departs from any bus station, but I think especially from the ones in the western part of the City. You can drive, of course, you'll see a lot of trees and stuff like that. The road is BIG, there's a lot of communication, don't worry.

It is fairly safe, but be prudent. Do not travel too early or too late Buses leave to Toluca on regular basis from Terminal Poniente (Observatorio) Caminante is a good bus line.
If you take a Taxi to get to the terminal, hire a Sitio (site) car. Observatorio is not the nicest place on Mexico City. If you know Polanco, Reforma or Santa Fe, is quite different. You have to keep a low profile and your eyes open. Pickpockets are common in bus terminals, but you shouldn´t expect violence. The same goes for Toluca terminal. Do not flash expensive jewelry, watches, gadgets, etc. and you should be OK. You can also hire a taxi from Mexico City to Toluca, however it is more expensive, but also is safer. |
