I'm going to be traveling to Costa Rica in 2 weeks and have read that raw fruits and vegetables are generally not safe to eat (because of the water and such) and need to be cleaned with disinfectant, not eaten unless it can be peeled, etc etc.
Considering I love to eat fruit I was wondering if the frozen fruit that you find in freezers at the grocery store is safe to eat. I don't know if the water presents a problem for this food. There's a supermarket in the place where I'm going, so it'd be great if I could buy frozen fruit. Thanks! |

I am sure frozen fruit would be fine. As far as that goes I always eat the fruit while I am in Costa Rica. Just wash it like you do any fruit. But if you are too worried stick with canned fruit or cook it yourself. I drink the water in Costa Rica too and have never had a problem...Just so you know I am not sure how much frozen fruit you will find in Costa Rica...everything is fresh. Just WASH it and peel it and enjoy. I am sure it is no worse than picking up fruit that has been handled by everyone and their dog at the local Wal-Mart Super Center! HA

You are probably better off with fresh fruit than with frozen fruit. It is still common to hear of ice companies being closed down because of dirty water used in the ice plant, or contamination from the machinery and the hands of the workers. The fresh water in C.R. is famously clean- several years ago a Swiss group decided that they could not help improve C.R. drinking water and instead used C.R. as an example of how to set up water supplies correctly.
So, just rinse off the fruit and eat away. You may want to avoid the lettuce during the rainy season but it is safe if your wash it carefully. Growing lettuce attracts a snail that has a parasite that can be harmful to people. |

Costa Rica generally has clean drinking water so frozen food shouldn't be an issue. However, I don't see why you would want to eat frozen food when you will have such a wide variety of fresh fruit available. Wash it and enjoy it.

I live in Central America and have heard dozens of armchair travelers out there with their horror stories about the dangers of living or traveling here. Contaminated fruit and vegetables is just one more story. Wash the fresh fruit and enjoy it. I'm sure you wash the produce before you eat it while in your own country. If Costa Rica is like where I live about the only frozen fruit you will find may be a package of strawberries once in awhile.
