We are trying to move to another country. Maybe central or south america. from the u.s. what are our options

Belize, in Central America, would seem to me to be the best choice since their national language is English.

Depends on your age and how much money/assets you hold. A lot of countries will only allow you to stay 90 days on a tourist visa. If you happen to be a holder of a passport of one of the countries, they may have an agreement with a neighboring country to enter using that.

If you are of retirement age or have retired, some countries allow you to enter on that if you have arranged it beforehand with the country.

If you are planning to open a business there, other rules apply and are possibly easier.

A lot of people I know have retired in Costa Rica. Panama is nice. I am settling down in the Peruvian amazons.

I would probably type in a search engine the country name you are thinking about and the word embassy to find the different visa requirements for where you want to go. That is of course after you read some of the reviews on expat.com or some other similar sites. Below is one site with listing of other sites.

I'm from Uruguay, and a lot of Americans and Europeans seem to be moving there. I've talked to a few, and they've mentioned the mild weather, very stable political situation and relative safety compared to the rest of Latin America as the reasons (plus, cheap property prices and low-ish cost of living).

Why is it you people think you can just move from the U.S. to ANOTHER COUNTRY as if you were moving to IOWA.?

There are just SO MANY variables. You can't work in any foreign country without having a work visa or becoming a resident Alien and that DEPENDS ON THE COUNTRY YOU WANT TO MOVE TO...

FIRST... you need to pick the country you want to move to... "central or south america" is just TOO BROAD to give you an answer.

SECOND: Contact the CONSULATE for that country, here in the U.S... usually in Washington, DC

THIRD: Get their information packet about IMMIGRATING to their country... what THEY require... because NOBODY here on answer can ANSWER your question, since you didn't even say WHAT COUNTRY you are interested in.

Be aware that, by the time you go through all the requirements, you will have anywhere form $5000 to $10000 involved in your move. You will have to PROVE that you have an INDEPENDENT INCOME of anywhere from $1000 to $2500 PER MONTH... so show you don't depend on earning money in THEIR country.

As a practical matter, I live outside the U.S. for at least 7 months each year, on my boat in the Caribbean and I have lived outside the U.S. most of the past 30 years. What I have seen is, AmeriKans who are failures in the U.S. and can't make it.. seem to think they can move to a foreign country... WHERE THEY CAN'T EVEN SPEAK THE LANGUAGE and they will suddenly be welcomed by the new country and the locals.. where they will become instantly successful.. AND IT DOESN'T HAPPEN... losers in the U.S. are generally LOSERS in the new country... and they don't last.

Although Ecuador is a small country, it has more options: beaches, mountain, jungle, islands, historical and modern cities. The currency is the american dollar. The weather is the best, because we dont have winter. Ecuador is a paceful country in general, the people is very friendly.
