It was said on the news last night (I live in Arizona) you will need a government issued I.D. card and your birth certificate (birth certificates combined with other forms of ID as proof of citizenship). Passport rules for ground entry (walking, driving) have not changed, but eventually you will need a passport or passport card to gain re-entry.

You do NOT need a passport to travel to and from Mexico by LAND yet. Thie requirement MAY go into effect as soon as next summer. See 1at site below to read the CURRENT info. See 2nd website for info on applying for the new passport card...which will be really handy when the passport requirement for LAND travel goes into effect. .

Originally the new law stated that you would have needed a passport to enter Mexico. But, because of a huge government backup in processing new passports (go figure), the enforcement of the law has been postponed. You don't need a passport to enter Mexico by car or on foot (just a birth certificate & drivers license or state ID) but one would be required if you were going deeper into Mexico by plane.

Along with a birth certificate... You need a Federal or State ID like a drivers licence, military id or federal id card. They have moved the passport thing to June 1st 2009 when everyone will need a passport to get back into the country. |
