I went to Cancun a few years ago but I went through Club Med. Therefore, I don't know if this applies to the other hotels. Our room had a safe to put our money and jewelry.
ALWAYS get bottled water. I got sick from the tap that they served me at the restaraunt I went to. Have fun! |

Most nice hotels have distilled water that they make ice with for us Gringos, out in town maybe not. Bottled water is very expensive in Mexico as well. You can get great deals on liquor at duty free shops when returning. Make friends with the concierge at your hotel. Stay away from the market on the street, it is a rip off, take lots of pics instead.

You really should call ahead to a hotel and see if they have safe access for you, just to be sure.
Definitely do not drink tap water, only the poorest locals do that, most people will only use purified water from a jug for drinking and cooking, so you'll probably be fine with ice. Haggling is expected in Mexico when you're buying goods and souviners, especially since you'll be overquoted since you're a foreigner, but don't be a douchebag and grind it down and dig into their ability to make a living because you're trying to be cheap. Avoid giving to panhandlers, especially children, you'll wind up in the uncomfortable situation of getting swamped by tons of more hands in your face. On the offchance you get sick off of something, go to the nearest pharmacy, they usually have just the right kind of medication for those specific type of illness you have since foreigners falling ill to certain bacteria is pretty common. |

I've been to MX many times and have never had a problem. Traveler's checks are fine. I've never been charged a cashing fee. It's a good idea to keep cash in your sock or underwear. Also, keep cash in several places. As far as I know, all hotels offer a hotel safe in the rooms. Any decent bar uses bottled water for ice. US currency is accepted anywhere in Mexico, no need to exchange for pesos. Puerto Viallarta is a tourist town and there is little or no need to learn Spanish, although attempting to speak some impresses the locals. The 2 most important words are bano and cerveza!!
