You must be one of the 95% of americans who don't realise that the world has other countries in it, with their own sovereignty, and immigration rules.
Most developed countries have a population with more than 60% of their citizens holding passports, why don't americans travel and find out about the rest of the world?
Sorry about that.
Have fun, Mexico is a good place with an incredible variety of scenery, from beaches to deserts to mountains and old towns where you eat tapas and drink tequila!

If you are from the United States, you will need one to return home. Start the process now, because the new law takes effect in a couple of months for flying, and the following year for driving.

As of December 31, 2006 you must have a passport to travel to Mexico. We just got back from Mexico and did not have a passport. It was no problem - you must have a driver's license or ID, and a birth certificate. If you name is different on your birth certificate than your license you must have your marriage license or proof of name change.
