Are you relating your question to the Cuban Crisis, if so, it was over the Soviet Union intent to install IBC's there, and it was in total violation to the treaty that was in place that covered the Central American countries, between them, the US and several other European nations. The confrontation ended with the US using its navy to blockade the ships carrying the missiles from the SU, and the entire world was on alert as it could have started WW III. The eventual outcome was that Kennedy didn't back off and the SU did, by turning their ships around and going back home. This is one of, if not the main one, (reason), that the US still boycotts Cuba.

It wasn't so much that the Soviet Union cared about U.S. involvement, but the U.S. was practicing its policy of containment and attempting to prevent the spread of communism. Many countries in Central America had socialist or communist leaders take over or get elected. The U.S. didn't like this, so the CIA and at times the gov.'t itself helped lead coups and overthrow the governments in place.
Also, in cases like Cuba, the U.S. attempted to help overthrow the gov.'t, which led Castro to turn to the other major power for aid, the USSR. The USSR was the main option as a helper for socialist and communist countries as the U.S. wouldn't help due to its efforts to contain communism. This increased tensions b/w the US and the USSR. |
