I'm going to jamaica (to be in a wedding) and I'm wondering about conversions, costs, and such.
I'll see if I can simply what i'd like to know: 1.) Do all the resorts in Jamaica take just American money, and are the prices adjusted for american dollars? 2.)If I dont plan on leaving the resort (half moon, montego bay) How much should I expect to bring, even just to eat for three days. 3.) How should I generally handle money down there? and if anyone has any other advice, tips, or knows a website where I could fins this I'd greatly appreciate it, Thanks! |

This wedding seems to be tripping you out. You have asked at least three questions about it. Your are either buying a package from a tour operator or you will be booking the package from a travel agent. How come you are scared to ask thew travel agent or tour operator. That is what they are there for--to supply you with as much information as possible so that you can make up your mind if their package is what you want. Then again--you could be invited and he expenses are paid for you--the least you can do is to do some homework.

All Caribbean islands accept american money. The american price and the jamaican dollar price is usually on sales items. You need to go online to research Jamaican currency and also you need to go and research how much a typically meal cost at the hotel so you can figure out a cost range for meals. Word of advice : Do not flaunt an excessive amount of money around. Tourists flashing alot of money are targets for being robbed. Just be discreet with flashing money. My advice : Use traveler's checks and/or credit cards if you don't want to carry a lot of cash. It is much safer.

US $ are accepted everywhere in Jamaica. Most restaurants have menus that have the prices listed in US...some have them listed in both US and Ja$.
If you are not in an all inclusive and plan to eat all meals at the hotel...I can guarantee you they will be much more expensive than going off the resort to local places which are fabulous. Not knowing what resort you are staying at I would venture to say breakfast would be around $10-15, lunch 15-20 and dinner 20-30 at the very least. This would not include tips are drinks. I usually plan on $100 a day and have money left over usually, but I tend to support the local places. Travelers checks are getting harder and harder to cash especially without being charged a fee. Anymore I just take cash and lock it up...There are ATM;s in Jamaica but be aware that they don't always work, they will give you cash in Jamaican $$ which is about 65 J to 1 US dollar. Also, one time I had one that acted like it was going to give me cash, never did but still debited my account. I had to have my bank take care of it when I got home...so thankfully I had enough cash with me and in the bank. Also, especially off the resort some places do not carry alot of change so take smaller bills. |

US Dollar, traveller's checks and major credit cards are widely accepted in the Carribean, including Jamaica. There are package deals in hotels (ie. with breakfast, lunch and dinner plus drinks), try to find one that suites your budget. Like in any other places, there are bad elements in Jamaica as well. Avoid bringing large quantity of cash, wearing expensive jewelries and bringing digital camera. Also try to avoid night life outside of the hotels. Enjoy your trip safe and sound.
