Does anyone know the cheapest way to travel from London to Puerto Rico in the Caribbean?

Also, is it worth renting a car when there or to stay in one place and take day trips to other areas?

The cheapest way is probably to swim or canoe.

Assuming you mean most cost effective as opposed to cheapest, flying is probably the best. I would suggest a travel aggregator like Sidestep.com to search for flights.

If you plan on exploring the island a car might be worth while. I think if you are planning on staying in San Juan, it'll probably be a waste. There are links to two discussion on the subject on two different travel boards below.

I dont really know the prices of flights from London, but check out websites like Orbitz.com, they have great deals. It helps if you click on 'flexible dates'. You will probably have to fly to Spain & then to PR or fly to the mainland USA & then to PR.

Yes I think it is worth it to rent a car in PR. San Juan is a nice city & there are lots of historical sites to see like El Morro Fort. There are restaurants, casinos, nightlife, shopping & beaches too. But there are also alot of great things to see & do outside of San Juan. You can take a tour bus from your hotel, but you will pay more money. So its better to rent a car for a few days. However driving in PR might be a little scary for you so its your choice. I suggest driving about 45 minutes to the east coast & go to El Yunque Rain Forest where you can hike & swim in waterfalls. Also if you want to see some of the most gorgeous beaches on earth you can take the ferry from the east coast town of Fajardo over to Vieques or Culebra island. Vieques also has the bioluminescent bay. From San Juan you can also drive about 45 mins to the worlds largest radio telescope in Arecibo & to Camuy Caves. Ponce is also a nice city in the South if you get time. They have Seralles Castle & Guanica dry forest. Watch the video below to see PR. Enjoy :)

Also if you rent a car- go to Thrifty, Payless or Dollar Car Rental. They are all cheap.

honetly the cheapest way wou;d be by boat.and i dont mean cruise liners i mean a plain boat...that would be the heapestway,but if u wanna go by plan youd hav to keep your ears out for any specials coming out. =)

The cheapest thing to do is to cruise providing there is a cruise leaving from your port to there. You might be able to leave from Southampton but that ship might not go to Puerto Rico. Alternatively virgin suppose to start new flights to Puerto rico so you can check it out.
