Ok, we own a business that is 30 miles away. I understand I can not deduct the normal commuting(Driving to work just to work) but if something comes up like a water pipe breaks or we need to travel up to do maintenance that is not my normal commute, can this instances be deducted?

No. You can only deduct mileage from one business location to another. If your business is 30 miles away, I would suggest setting-up a legitimate home office with an Internet connection to your work server.
Document that you spend an hour or so before and after work, doing business-related activities at your home office each day, and the mileage to/from the business location will become deductible. At $0.505 per mile, this should give you a deduction of about $7,500 for 2008. This should be plenty to justify setting-up a home office. Just be sure to keep judicious records of your at-home work activities as well as mileage logs to support your deduction. Good luck! |
