Default Should coworkers be made to share a hotel room on business travel?

My company requires that any same sex coworkers traveling together share a single hotel room. Am I the only one who around here who doesn't want her coworkers to see her in her jammies and bunny slippers? This seems to push the limits of professionalism, and is totally trapped in the past because of course it assumes everyone is straight. I've worked for a few different employers and this is a first for me. My boss said that of course I can have my own hotel room ... if I PAY FOR IT!!!

Is this crazy ... or am I?
I'm actually not afraid anyone's going to make the moves on me... but by making the rules different for different sex coworkers my company implies that this might be the case for different sex coworkers, which is ridiculous.

My lack of comfort comes from the humiliation of having to share a hotel room with someone who I want to maintain a professional relationship with. A hotel room feels too intimate for coworkers who barely talk at work.

I appreciate all of your honest answers, but just wanted to fill in this gap I left in the original post.

I think it depends on what you are doing and how big your company is. If they don't have them means to pay for your separate room, then get another job. You are wasting your time. I know from the sexual harrasment trainings I have been to, you could claim sexual harrasment if they are forcing you to share a room. You are uncomfortable about it, so therefore that is sexual harrasment. (according to these trainings.)
Are you required to go. I tend to follow the rule of...if I am required to do it on your time, then you are required to foot the bill.

A non-profit I would expect it. A for profit, would depend on the company's financials. Although I could see some HR issues coming into play.

There is nothing wrong for your boss expecting you to share your room. That is a common practice. Your boss is right in saying that you can have a private room if you pay for it. It does not show you trying to be a member of the team when you act like this.

I guess I don't understand what difference being gay or straight would make. You're sleeping, not trolling. I also assume there would be separate beds. Buy new more professional pajamas if necessary.

yes you should pay for your own room if you feel that uncomfortable.
the company is there to profit .
you are there to make a profit for the company, that is why you sold your self to them (job interview).
if your coworker puts the moves on you report her. FEAR is false expectations appearing real.
the only thing you need to fear is fear itself.
you're a big girl think of it as a girls night out .

You should never have to share a hotel room on business travel. What this says to you about this company is that they are cheap. What does this mean for your future there? It means you are going to get hosed on raises and everything else. What do they match on your 401(K)? Not much I assume. Start to look for a new job, one that treats you like the adult that you are!
