Hello Charlotte:
Yahoo! can absolutely help you advertise your travel business!
I have used Yahoo! pay-per-click (ppc) ads for quite a while advertising my own travel business. I have had good success not only driving traffic to my site - http://www.ytbfiji.com - for booking travel but also advertising the business opportunity. Because I use 2 different marketing websites - http://www.ytbfiji.biz and http://www.travelpropower.com/information - I can set up marketing campaigns that will show me which website will get the best click-throughs.
Yahoo! is a good place to start your advertising because there are several safety measures to prevent you from 'loosing your shirt' as can sometimes happen with ppc.
You can set daily limits on your ads, so if you want to budget $5 per day or $50 per day, you have that safeguard.
Also, the placement of your ads within Yahoo! depends not just on who bids the highest, but who has the most relevant content. This is HUGE! Prior to this upgrade with Yahoo!, people or companies that could afford to pay the most got their ads in the top positions. This is no longer the case, because content is now relevant. It levels the playing field. In fact, is it the case that a lower bidding ad can definitely rank higher due to better matching of content.
You can also geographically target your ads to specific contries, states or metro areas. I don't know how much that would help you, as travel is universal, but the option is there if you want. I have found it useful when marketing the business.
Yes, you can try some of the second tier search engines and they may be cheaper, but the best bang for my buck (and I've been doing this for over 5 years) has been Yahoo!
