30 years ago the travel industry hired way too many people. The travel offices were full and there were waiting lists of workers. Everyone who couldn't fit into the office had to work at home. They made no money. NOne. And the airlines stopped giving out free flights to the work-at-home agents. They felt like many people were only in the industry to get free flights and cruises.
If you would like to go on the cruises, work in a travel office. You will also make money. Working at home is a great way to starve. I know from experience. /

Travel is a very competitive business. Also, like any business you have to have the skills to invite, present your business, close the sale and if necessary follow up. You also need to have a personal "why" and written down goals of what you want to achieve.

Business is about building relationships with your customer. In regards to it being safe, there are no guarantees. Additionally, just because one person was not successful, does not mean you won't. However, on the other hand, if 100 people were very successful, does not mean you will be. In regards to how much time does it take up, is not a good question to ask if you are truly dedicated to making your business a success. When you are in business, you are living and breathing it 24 hours a day, This does not mean working 24 hours a day, but finding ways to improve yourself and your business. When you are in business, you should look forward to starting your day.

You need to be passionate and more importantly, you have to be mentally tough to face the objections and rejections. If you get a travel business, you need to work on that which will get you the most business. In travel the money is in cruises and vacation packages, If you are interested my profile page has more info.

If you feel that a travel business is not for you then you might consider getting a job in a hotel (travelers have to sleep some where), working at an airport, on a cruise ship, rental car agency, etc. There are all kinds of industries related to travel.

I wish you great success.

I do know a lot of people who have home based businesses in several different industries from telecommunications to travel. The ones that are in travel businesses DO make a good income, depsite what Ed says. He may not of made money, but you can if you put the right type of effort into things and follow people who have succeeded in this industry and not by others who have failed in business. There's a great article you should read on home based business opportunities. I think it will answer your detailed message in full details. A lot of great information on it, things to do and not to do. It's aimed for general home based businesses, not pointed out to a direct industry. But there are a list of over half a dozen different industries and travel agents are on there. You could probably contact one to ask them questions on how much time it takes and what not.
Good Luck!
