Default How do you travel around the world on a limited budget?

Any ideas? I have heard of couchsurfing which is going to be a great tool for me, but any hope in low rates for college students? I want to immerse myself in different cultures as much as possible (but with a semi-tiny budget.) if it matters, i am a college student.

Same here. College student on a budget. In january i got a nonstop flight from las vegas to london for 500 dollars and it was lastminute! The airlines was from virginatlantic. Anyway you probably want to do research on the places you want to go. For example say you want to go to europe.... dont be to specific and determine that you want to go to italy.. Italy is great but getting their is expensive from the USA. So this is what you..... Lets say you live in LA. There are many flights nonstop from La to frankfurt, germany for like 600 or 700 roundtrip. That is the cheapest way to get to europe from LA. BUt remember you want to go to italy.... Well now that you are in germany all you have to is take the eurostar! Maybe 100 or 200. Or you can find flights loosely for dirt cheap. Traveling within europe is very very easy, the problem is getting there from the USA.

And if you live on the east coast, im jealous of you. You have flights every day to amsterdam, paris, london, ect. Like i said earlier, it doesnt matter what city you fly to europe, as long as it is the cheapest ticket. Cause once your there, your set.

And for discounts, get a student card!

Of course, couchsurfing is a good (albeit with a little bit of risk) means. There are also hostels, work-for-board, etc. methods. Teaching english in an impoverished area, for instance, is one "work-for-board" type gig I've seen posted.

As for getting around... Air may be the best mode to get from area to area; but within an area, there are better (less expensive) options. Trains and buses are my favorites. You can mingle a little, see a bit of the country, and the costs is usually a fraction of airfare.

Depending on how long you have to travel, and how much you want to do, there are two interesting airfare packages I'm aware of. Both are "round-the-world" type packages. Basically, you buy your airfare all up front, travel from continent to continent, and pay one fee for the whole trip. The two programs I know of are the Star Alliance and One World (both conglomerations of major airlines).

There may be other programs, and I've added a few links below. This is a once-in-a-lifetime type trip, and I hope you have a great one! Cheers!
