Traveling to Virginia from San Diego on low budget, any suggestions?

I was thinking of getting a one way ticket to virginia and then taking a bus/train back home. Might be cheaper just to do a round trip ticket however.. any suggestions? :)

If you can go after Sep 5th, and travel from Philadelphia, you can get cheapest round trip fare for $218, right now from DC or norfolk to SD round trip about $400
