Default Intend to travel to India & back from Melbourne. Do any budget airlines operate in this circuit? 1 stopover ok

Primarily to visit Kerala (which is on the Lonely Planet Must - See!). Nearest international airports would be Chennai, Bangalore, and may be Mumbai/Bombay

Yeah, there are quite a few. It might help, though, if you told us where in India you wanted to go.

As for right now - you are stuck with only one LCC in yout area - JetStar (which is a sub-set of Qantas) and they do fly to Singapore. Now, when you arrive in Singapore, then you will have to connect onto JetStar Asia (which is the airline's sister) and then travel to India.

As for the future - Tiger Airways will be a great bet for you, but just like JetStar, you will have to connect through Singapore and onto Tiger Airways Asia.

Apart from that - simply try to get a cheep ticket to Singapore or to Bangkok and then your oppurtunities open up alot, as there are many LCCs that operate out of those cities to India.

Try the link below to find cheap fares...
but if you are not far from the Gold coast in Australia you could hop on AirAsiaX to Kuala Lumpur this the best low cost carrier from SE-Asia and then with a normal flight to India.
Or with Jetstart to Singapore, and then a regular flight to India all Indian carriers fly into Singapore the link below gives you plenty of options....

You will have to stop atleast twice. You have 3 options:
1.Sri Lankan Airlines:From melbourne to Bangalore via Colombo. You can take a jet airways flight from Bangalore to Kerala.
2. Malaysian Airlines: Tullamarine-Bangalore via Kuala Lampur.
3. Singapore Airlines: Melbourne-Bangalore via Singapore.
