I would not stay in the city if you want to save $. There are not many good deals in town. If you don't mind being out of the city Cambridge might be cheaper.

there is one in Dorchester, right down the road I stayed there for a Bruins game, you need a cab to get downtown(5 min ride) but it is the Marriot of Boston they call it and it's ten times cheaper than downtown, has a little jacuzi and pool, not the ritz but pretty nice

Ya you may want to stay at the marriot in Cambridge that is directly outside Boston, or you can stay at a Holiday Inn.

Sorry to say but you won't find any reasonably priced hotel near the Boston Common. All of those hotels are a good 200+ a night if not more.

There is NOTHING "reasonably priced" near Boston Common.
The closest would be the Milner Hotel (7 minute walk) and the Chandler Inn (12 minute walk).

What about looking into the Hyatt Regency in Cambridge?
Close to a lot of things, and places?

We really liked the Omni Parker House, which is a 5 - 10 minute walk away up Tremont Street. I think we had our room there for around $150/ night, definitely found it to be very clean, close to a lot of things and generally just a good value.
