Of course peoples definations of good are often very different. Its a matter of taste.
Barcelona isnt the most economic of areas to stay in reality. There are 'hostals' that are the cheapest generally. They arent hostals as they have in England, they are budget hotels basically and often sufficient for certain types of traveler.
The more popular locations, i.e Las Ramblas areas can be quite pricey but with a great tube system it can sometimes be better to be ten minutes away. The most popular areas are the port, the gothic area and the ramblas area. These are quite seperated from each other so wherever you are situated you will have to get about a little to see all those areas anyway.
As suggested in other posts, searching can be made easier with booking systems, the one i use personally is at http://www.conference-coordinator.com/spain-hotels.htm which uses google maps etc and so i can choose my area and then my budget kinda thing. Very useful.
Another option is to call the tourist board themselves who may give recommendations for your indivual requirements.
The Barcelona tourist website I believe is located at http://www.barcelonaturisme.com/
