Walk out to Phetchaburi Road and you will find lots of street vendors. The Baiyoke Tower Hotel is not that far away. The soi leading up to the Baiyoke Tower Hotel is full of clothing discounters.

Look at this map link, the soi leading up to the Baiyoke Tower Hotel is almost across the street from the Panthip Plaza (computers/electronics mall.) Real easy to find and it is an easy walk from your hotel. http://www.bangkok.com/first-house-hotel-bangkok/#location

When you take a taxi in Bangkok to anywhere else, make sure you tell the driver to use the meter only! If you bargain the price of the fare you pay more. Also, wave a moving taxi down, avoid the taxi cabs parked near hotels - they usually want to bargain the ride. Meter taxi cabs will be cheaper than tuk-tuks. If a tuk-tuk driver offers you a deal of a free ride that will almost always mean they will take you to places to buy stuff where you pay more and the driver gets a commission.

Good luck.
