I'll tell you that you can go to Bangkok cold and *easily* find discount places to stay such as guesthouses. I went during the peak tourist season there (New Years) and was able to find a place with the help of the taxi driver.
I had been there before and tried to book a place I stayed the year previous, but a lot of the discount places may not book for you; rather, you should show up in person, unlike the hotels, but even the hotels prefer their guests to show in person since there are so facking many in Bangkok.
As for price, you won't have to pay more that $15 per night for a decent guesthouse, probably a lot cheaper than this if you hunt around. They are found all along the main streets, sidestreets, backstreets - everywhere!
Since Bangkok is a tourist city you will find ample tourist info booths and guides in the airport that will help you find discount housing. Of course they will prefer that you get the hotels, you can still get their cooperation.
