What sort of backpack shall I take travelling around Europe for 3 months this summer?

A strong, durable and waterproof one with some extra space.

Make sure you get one that allows you to completely unzip the front, like a suitcase - these are sometimes called a 'hybrid' backpack. Backpacks that only allow access from the top make it frustrating in trying to access items that are down the bottom. Also ensure the shop attendant fits it for you so it's nice and comfortable when you're lugging it around.

Get a 65-70 litre rucksack. Some come with wheels now but I'd still suggest one that you can carry as a proper rucksack as you'll be on the move a lot.
