You kind of have to do both to appreciate the contrast. I mean, what is big if you have no small to compare it to? Europeans don't consider their elevators small. Americans don't consider their supermarkets big. The question is which one to do first. Europe is awfully expensive in the summer. And all you meet are other tourists, 'cos the locals are out of town on holiday. On the other hand, NY and LA are not my first choices of American destinations. But then I have been there. You can do that once, only try to stay away from tourist traps.
