What about the poor non French speaking Canadians having to put up with this? I for one think this underhanded attempt by the Yanks to make them seem less of a target is ruining the whole purpose of travel to these flea pit destinations. I dont hide my Welsh accent when I'm overseas, and I dont get any trouble. Although I did go to France once and had a few problems, but thats the Frenchies for ya-poodle walking, horse eating miscreants that they are.

Yes, some Americans stitch Canadian flags to their backpacks only because they don't want to face discrimination from people in the country they are visiting.
In some countries (with let's say white people), its not hard for people to mistake a Australian with a Briton or vice versa. For me (I'm East Asian) everyone thinks I'm Chinese or Korean, even though I'm Vietnamese. So its easy for an American to be passed as a Canadian by locals. I wouldn't stitch the Canadian flag on my backpack because there is nothing wrong about where you are from. In general, most countries don't like other countries. For me, living in the most hated country in the world is something I would be afraid of traveling abroad. If you were in our shoes, I think you would understand why some people do it. |

True, I know people that have done this and my travel agent suggested it. I didn't do it because I am Puerto Rican and don't fit the American stereo type. Also, I feel no need to cover my identity and deny where I am from. At the same time I didn't flaunt that I am from America.
