It actually depends on you because it'll have to fit your body. However, I have a big pack which has a waist belt and that waist belt is a real life saver! Make sure you get one where the waist belt sits on the hips and is nice and wide, comfortably padded and really easy to get tight. I have a Berghouse and they used a kind of lip over buckle rather than the clip together one which could be pulled really tight to stabilise a heavy load. Some small bags have it at waist height and really just stabilise the bag. By carrying the majority of the weight of the bag on the hips and not the shoulders you'll be able to carry more or the same amount easier. I also like a chest strap to pull the main straps together as I find this stops the straps pulling back on the shoulders. Look for easy adjust shoulder straps as well.
I also put a couple of pouches on the waist belt to carry essentials or things I need to get to and a smaller bag on one of the main straps for my phone.
Depending on what you want it for will dictate the volume. One too small can't carry anything else, a bigger one will carry less if you don't need it filled and modern sac are very light so you're not carrying much excess weight. I also find bigger sac more comfortable and they usually have wider shoulder straps.. I used to get rucksacs with split compartments thinking it was easier to divide the load, but personally I got sick of working out how to carry bigger items so I'd suggest one main big compartment and use stuff sacs.
A big pouch on the rucksac lid is really useful I find and an inner security zipped pocket for spare money, tickets, etc.
You might want one that's easy to lug down train corridors as well, so look out for one that's not too wide.
