We are travelling round Aus/NZ. Fly to Sydney, then 2 weeks in Auckland, a week in Rotorua, 12 days in Wellington, 10 days in Christchurch, 2 weeks in Sydney, 2 weeks in Melbourne, 2 weeks in Hobart, and then home.
Already booked Sydney to home flights and 2 weeks in Sydney accom, how much do you reckon we should take out altogether for the trip approx.? Thanks for any help. Just to add we plan on staying in hostels and buying and cooking most of our food in supermarkets. How much you reckon for the 3 months all in all, with that plan in mind? Ballpark figure of course. |

We're planning a RTW trip ourselves. We'll spend 3 weeks in AU and 3 weeks in NZ.
After spending some time reading up on it in books and the internet... Australia We're going with a 75USD per day budget for food and misc items (such as gifts, etc). We'll get a Central Coaster Pass from Greyhound for 183AUD per pax. Accomodation 100AUD per day http://www.big4.com.au/ http://www.greyhound.com.au/ New Zealand Also 75USD per day, accomodation 70NZD per day. Still working on how it is to get around. http://www.intercitycoach.co.nz/ http://www.top10.co.nz/ Obviously a lot depends on how luxuriously you want to travel. There's a big difference between backpacking thru AU nad NZ staying hostels, or renting a car and staying in 4-5 star hotels. Also, you probably want to allocate an extra $500 per adult for any sightseeing and activities. Hope this helps. |

Hey,
it all depends on where you want to stay or what you want to eat. You seem to be sticking to the main cities so if you want cheap then back packers it is. dorms are roughly AUD$18 and up. travel in Melbourne and Sydney can be very cheap with the train and tram. i think the above budget is a good guideline, but you could do it for a little less. I however found NZ fairly expensive (I'm Australian), i spent about $500 on food and souvenirs in about 10 days. A main meal in a nice restaurant in Australia could set you back $15-30pp. Same in NZ. If you are flying i would sign up to jetstar.com or virginblue.com.au news letters, and wait till they have a sale and book it quick, as you can make big savings, they both also fly to NZ. ( so do, freedomair.com.au) Grab a guide book, and write down all the sights you want to see and budget for them, then write down your daily food and accommodation expenses and add some extra for emergency's. also 25NZD for departure tax! PS. Depending on what you are into, Queenstown was my favourite place in all of NZ, simply beautiful and plenty to do. Melbourne is my favourite city in Australia, depending when you arrive you should check out an AFL match at the MCG or cricket if in the summer. Have a great trip, |
