Default Traveling to Australia this summer- what unique gifts should I buy?

Actually, it's my son who is traveling to Australia on a student trip. I'm trying to come up with some ideas of unique gifts he could bring back. Besides the boomerang and the didgerido, what else is Australia famous for? Are there any "must buys" from Australia?

digerido and boomerangs might not be allowed on a plane because there wood,, you might be able to take wood products from australia but you cant bring it in.
australia is popular for the Sydney harbour bridge , Sydney opera house , Ayres rock, crocodiles, beaches, and also the small country towns spread out all across australia with known as the out back,

Yes defiantly an Akubra Hat ... http://www.akubra.com.au/ or http://www.australiangear.com.au

There are so many markets around with souvenirs everywhere.

Didgeridoos and boomerangs are fine to take back overseas - they are treated.
Most places for the postage cost will pack your didgeridoo right in front of you and mail back to your home country. Same with other souvenirs if he wants to spend up big in one place they’ll box it over. This saves him lugging it around everywhere while on holiday.

an original AFL footy called a sherrin football and a footy jumper, forget about all that other rubbish like cork hats and boomerangs none of us actually use any of that crap its just junk we sell to tourists,if you don't like the footy idea how about some clothes by Aussie designers at least you can actually use them.

Forkys got the right idea. Most Australians would not be seen dead with wattle seed crapola in a jar at high prices, corks dangling from the hat would be a costume party thing, I've had kangaroo once but I prefer duck.

Get something useful - try RM Williams clothing -(not real cheap, but the moleskin jeans are great), maybe a Drizabone which make decent raincoats even if they do smell a bit odd, and of course the Akubra (or other brand) hat. A boomerang might make a good toy.

Or if you have a bit of cash, how about a painting by one of the Petyarre ladies or Clifford Possum Tjapaljarri, or Pro Hart.

Opals, sapphires, Tambo teddies are good too. Red Gum honey you can buy in most of the larger supermarkets and is the best. You can also get Rugby League and Union jerseys in sports shops which will be unique overseas though as common as muck here. Holden Special Vehicle (HSV) jacket.

Slab of Castlemaine-Perkins XXXX. Or Cascade. Don't bother with the Fosters, you can get that anywhere. Or how about a 2-liter bottle of beer - a "Darwin Stubby" - instant party?
