No it is not that expensive in fact it can be cheaper (and quicker) to fly from the east coast of Australia to New Zealand than it is to fly to the West Coast of Australia.
On Virgin if you book early enough and depending on what day you go you can pay anything from $300 to $500. Departing from Sydney to Auckland. Qantas will also have flights of various prices. Jetstar also flies to Christchurch. You just have to book early get promotional fares and you can save lots of money and get a relatively cheap flight :). |

If you fly out of Brisbane or Sydney I've found fares for $200 to fly across 'the ditch' as we call it.
When I book I always make sure I look at the 'happy hour' fares on Virgin Blue site. Air NZ is the most expensive, so don't go there if you want to get ripped off. |

Last year our family of 4, travelled to New Zealand for $936 return. We travelled during low season and obtained our airfares during one of Jetstar's sales. Best to checkout Jetstar & Virgin airlines and compare. If u susbcribe to newsletters you get to know when the sales are happening.

Kia Ora,
Depends on from where to where, but right now there are some great online fares at Freedom Air. Just have to plan your departure (and return, if any) because unlike JetStar, ANZ, Qantas, Freedom doesn't fly to every city daily. Freedom has been my choice for bouncing back and forth from here to Sydney. It's no frills, but a clean safe ride and almost always on time--or early! Good luck - Glad to know you'll be visiting :-) |
