Aloha from Down Unda!

You decission will be based solely on your own ability to recognise that the options of commercial & public transportation are far superior to rentals or buying private transportation..

There are enough trains, buses [refered to as 'coaches'] airplanes & taxis to preclude the need to rent or buy a car here.

Just 'my' suggestion as an ex-taxicab owner/operator for more than 16 yrs in Honolulu & living in Australia 7 years without the need of road rage, high fuel costs, insurance & maintenence!

Best wishes ~

Distances are quite an issue in Australia, for example the distance from Sydney to Perth is further than London to Moscow but there are not many signs of civilisation in between. To make matters worse domestic travel is quite expensive, Jetstar and Virgin Blue have relatively cheap airfares but they aren't anywhere near the cut price fares offered in Europe.

I'd buy a camper and share the costs with a few mates and see the sites for myself. There are many agencies that will sell then re-sell on departure.

Have fun, I'm envious and would love the thought of a three month road trip.

Just buy an old Holden station wagon chuck a mattress in the back and look for some back backers to go along for the ride to share expenses then sell it or dump it before you leave. This comes from when I went to Monkey Mia in West Aus (my home State)while I was there we meet these 3 great English back backers and they had done just that and along they way they picked up a young Japanese man that was riding around Aus on a push bike( I kid you not quite a common site to see a couple of Japanese on bikes in the distance) and he decided he would share expenses because he didn't realize how far between drinks it was over here.So don't buy a pushbike it might cheap but it is a bloody long way round.
Anyway I hope you enjoy visiting OZ and try and see an Aussie rules football match while here you will love it.

you can rent a vehicle for about $200 per week, insurance will be about $1,000.00. it will be less if you go to Rent-A-Wreck.
greyhound fares are approximately equal to the cost of petrol to drive the same route.
you can buy a vehicle but face repairs if it breaks down.
Australia is huge. If I was embarking on your itinerary I would probably join the YHA, then travel by train or greyhound with a few days layover in each destination. you could pick up cheap flights if they are available.
driving would be more fun if you want more flexibility.
