Firstly you definatley need a passport. Australia is another country.

You will need to obtain a Visa, contact your local Australian Consulate-General or High Commission (Embassy). For more information.

Yes, you need both a passport and an Australian visa.

What a question!

No, you don't need a passport to go to another country.

Just go to the airport and just tell them you're an American and you don't need a passport. They'll understand.

For all information about visas and the forms to apply for them online, go to the Department of Immigration website at http://www.immi.gov.au
