I want to go to Australia in late Aug-early Sept alone. Is there a safe/fun travel/ tour grp you'd recommend?

I can't recommend a tour group or what not, but I can tell you when I was there with my boyfriend we have a lot of fun sight seeing.
Just remember that august and september over there would be winter.

There are many tour groups - all are very safe! It depends on whether you want a party style (like contiki) or a bit more upmarket. Theres contiki, Ozbus, Wayward Bus tours (my fav) and more upmarket like APT, Cobb and Co and AAT Kings. Hope that helps.
