Me and my boyfriend are off to Australia next year to go backpacking. We are planning to go for 3 months travelling around Southern Australia. We are staying in cheap hostels and camping. Travelling by walking on foot, and catching the bus. We are obviously trying to spend as little as possible but also have a good time, go out some evenings and do some activites. Does anyone have an idea from personal experience how much it costs? Thanks x

Cost is very difficult for anyone else to calculate. You are on the right money-saving track. My advice is to fix some of your own meals, make sandwiches and most important - eat only in local pubs or working men's clubs (any local will know) as the food is good as well as the beer and it is all reasonable. The locals will know where to go and you will be welcomed. The Australians are what we used to be and no longer are. Have fun and try to see New Zealand too. Bed and Breakfasts if you need a room.
