I guess it all depends on whether you are travelling alone or with others ..if you can share costs the best way is to hire a camper van & stay in caravan parks...
That way you can plan an itinerary & see all that you want to in your own time frame..
If you can't afford that maybe get a greyhound coach pass that allows you the flexibility to hop on & off at different places..
Either way , you'd be best advised to think about exactly what you want to see & budget your time accordingly...
Enjoy...

I live on the North East coast of NSW and u can pretty much get anywhere on a train or bus! Its cheap, and a really effective way of travelling! if u want to go on a longer trip eg NSW to QLD then Country Link is the way to go! The timetables are easy to follow aswell in NSW City Rail is the company that runs the trains so go to their website and u can find all your info!! Country Link also has a website!

The BEST way to do it is to rent a campervan!!!

The cheapest campervan rental company you will find is "Wicked Campers". They allow you to pick up in one place and drop off in another, which is great for a relatively short 6 week trip. Check out their website for quotes: http://www.wickedcampers.com.au/

You will outlay probably between $2000 to $3000 for the van, but keep in mind this covers your transportation AND your accommodation, because then you can camp in the van for free or for very, very cheap.

Australia is extremely camping-friendly, there are free roadside camp spots all along the east coast or better yet you can camp within Australia's endless spectacular National Parks.

The best way is to hire your own transport (campervan or car), it gives you freedom to stop wherever you want and it's much cheaper than travelling by buses or trains.

Between Sydney and Cairns, i would stay at Byron Bay, Brisbane, Noosa, Hervey Bay (to go to Fraser Island), Airlie Beach (Whitsunday Islands), Townsville (Magnetic Island), and Mission Beach.
