I have booked a flight to leave London on 29th November to go to Bangkok, Leave Bangkok on February 10th to fly to Cairns in Australia where I will travel on the Oz experience bus down the east coast stopping along the way to Sydney. I am 27 and this will be my first time travelling anywhere on my own, I am very excited but also a bit anxious and nervous. I am planning to spend 3 nights in Bangkok before heading south to Koh Samui for a few weeks and then I want to spend new years eve on Koh Phanang at the full moon party. I also hope to go to Krabi, Koh Phi Phi, Langkawi and if I fancy it then more of Malaysia. I have also heard about a place called Ko Lipe which sounds good. After Malaysia I could go back north to Vietnam or Cambodia as I am planning on gettin an air asia flight back to Bangkok from Kuala Lumpar. I am hoping to take about £4500 away with me and then work in on my way to Sydney if my money runs out before I get there and then I have a friend in Sydney who I can stay with for a bit and work to earn more money before moving on. I have been granted my Australian working visa. I would appreciate advice on places and things people think I should experience and if anyone has been on the Oz experience bus before I would like to hear about it. Also do you think £4500 will last me to Sydney, obviously I don't know the date I will get to Sydney but I don't really want to rush there....

It'll be a doddle. My son did the same at 22 travelling out to Oz on his own,met up with folk there .He was 22 at the time.Did Thailand with a mate, loved it.He got by on €3,000 but got great work in Perth, even bought a car for himself to get about and sold it before he left.Work was getting scarce when he left in April though,he's doing Canada now and went out there on his own too.Enjoy.
Edit:He did Koh Samui got the train down and a ferry across, stayed in beach huts, very, very cheap. He just did one day in Bangkok, not too impressed, smelly, noisy place.Koh Samui he reckoned was beautiful. |

£4500 should be plently of money for 2 months in Thailand. I spent one month there and it only cost about £500. Of course it depend on the kind of living your going to be having i.e.fancy hotels and meals or the budget option but you should definitely have loads left over.
Bangkok is an experience! 3 nights should be long enough there though. Didn't go to Koh Samui but I heard it was nice but very up upmarket touristy sorry i cant be of more help. I also spent New Years Eve on Koh Phanang 07/08 and it was the best night i've ever had. 40,000 people on the one beach! be careful there though especially when it hits midnight as people will come up and hug you while taking your money out of your pocket. Krabi and Koh Phi Phi are gorgeous make sure you go to the island where the Beach was filmed its beautiful. Langkawi is also similarly stunning.Would say if you had the time definitely go to Vietnam and Cambodia and whilst your there why not Laos as well (just ask about tubing, it will make you want to go!) I did the Oz experience in Australia and although it is expensive i would say its definitely worth the money. You get to see of the beaten track places and you tend to make so many friends and have such a laugh on the buses that you wont want it to end. It was one of the highlights of my trip. Little tip - when i booked mine it was actually a lot cheaper to book it out there in Australia then to book it from the UK even with the deals they were offering over here. In terms of places to see in Oz you should get to see a fair bit on the bus, but of course if you ever want to see a little bit more you can just hop off and travel for a bit then rejoin another bus when your finished. Hope thats helpful. By the way the site i used for advice on where to go and what to take was this one: http://www.budget-backpacking.co.uk The checklist on that sit is priceless! |

be careful whilst in thailand.
and bear in mind, that there is sex on offer almost everywhere in bangkok. and you are a VERY long way from home. that alcohol is enticingly affordable. whilst there it is tempting to 'live like a king'. for a while. its interesting to see capitalism in action. some of the advantages are 'evident'. in some places a blind eye is turned to the narcotic trade. which can be a bit of an 'eye-opener'. so i've set out the 'dangers' which one 'should' 'avoid'. hope the trip is 'an adventure' for you. give the place my regards. |

You will be fine. I travel alone for business all the time. My advice.... Skip Australia all together and spend all of the time in Thailand. Thailand is safe as long as you don't go out of your way to piss anyone off or do anything really dumb the worst thing that will happen to you is that you will overpay for some tourist crap. Just don't go near any kind of drugs, and if there is any kind of fight between Thai people stay out of it. The main thing to remember about Thailand is that the rules are DIFFERENT but that does not mean that there are NO rules. Be cool to people and u will be fine. Australia is probably equally safe but way less fun.
