Hi there,
I am seriously considering 'going travelling' and would really appreciate any feedback you can provide. I am at that point in life where I don't yet have a mortgage or a partner and I'm not in love with my job, so could easily leave things behind to do this trip (before I'm too old/responsible/boring). I have been thinking about it for some time and think that if I don't go I will end up regretting it. So... I would like to travel to Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Singapore, etc etc as many places as I can see in the Southern Hemisphere. I have quite a few friends who have returned home to New Zealand and Australia too, so the lure is pretty strong. I would be going out on my own, meeting up with friends along the way and hopefully making friends too. I guess my first question is: realistically, how much money do you estimate it will it cost (including flights etc) to do say a year trip? I would probably work along the way in NZ and/or OZ. Also any general tips anyone has would be very welcome. Thanks in advance. |

there are quite a few sites that you can search that will likely give you the best prices available. check out the website BookMe and you will be able to compare prices on all the reputable travel sites in just a couple minutes. it's very convenient and will save you a bunch of time and money. Also, make sure you buy them online... otherwise they charge much higher fees for phone orders. good luck.

I am going to work in Australia as part of my gap year in 2012. I am hoping to spend 4 months there. So I have researched this area a lot.
A return flight would cost around £500 to Sydney/Melbourne. I would recommend Singapore Airlines as it is a nice and cheap airline. Plus if you are planning to go to Singapore anyway then you can kill to birds with one stone as you stop there half way though your journey to Australia for 1+ days. (Its a small country anyway so only spend 2 days there). Its relatively cheap in Australia so you can find living and spending there cheap as well. Accommodation- you can easily rent a flat in Sydney and get a part time job. Type in Google 'Sydney accommodation' and you will find lots of homes and prices on various websites. Anyway good luck and enjoy. |

Hello, i am in the same boat as you but i have actually booked my ticket and been granted my Australian working visa...My flight is to Bangkok on 29th Nov, I then travel around Thailand, Malaysia and anywhere else I fancy going when I am there until Feb 10th when I fly to Cairns in Australia where I have a oz experience bus trip planned which takes you to great places all along the east coast all the way to Sydney and you can stop off at each destination along the way for as long as you wish and then just hop on the bus again when you want to move on. The bus is for travellers so it won't be a problem meeting people... I am travelling alone and this will be the first time I have been travelling anywhere. I am planning to take about £4500 with me and then I think I will have to work on my way to Sydney where I could do fruit picking or even get an office admin job...It's daunting going alone but it's something i feel i have to do before i get too old and regret it....I can't wait, have fun....
