Default Spending 3 months traveling around Australia alone?

Next year I am planning on spending 3 months traveling around Australia.(back up plan, oppose to going to uni) I know all about the visa etc but i'm quite worried about the traveling and going alone, Will i meet other travelers out there who may become prospective traveling partners? or am i completely alone?
For the first week I will probably spend it in a hotel to settle but then from then onwards i shall hit the hostels.
How much money will i need to take with me minimum? I will get a holiday working visa so I will be earning some extra cash. (hopefully!)
Any advice is welcome as I am quite in the dark right now but I really do want to do this.
Thanks in advance :)

You will definitely meet other travellers while you are there but the best way of achieving this will be to stay in backpackers hostels not hotels. Holidaymakers stay in hotels - travellers stay in backpackers hostels!

Hey Emily.
I'm doing pretty much the same but for 12 months and i'm leaving in 20 days!!! I thought the same as you about being alone so i opted for going through OzIntro as a starting point. but if you did it alone you would no doubt meet different people along the way through hostels. Alot of people will be in same boat as you. Have a little look see if you fancy it. i have no plan if that makes you feel better and your not leaving till next year. good luck whichever way you do it.

Australian here. It's a very safe country and people are friendly. You'll definitely find lots of fellow travellers especially in the summer months, but all year round really. Just hit the backpacker websites and find the local hangouts. You certainly won't be alone.

Minimum money? It really depends on what you want to do and where you want to go. Most national parks are free but some do have an entry fee of a couple of dollars. Just check online when you find out where you want to go. Guided tours (especially ones in helicopters or boats) can set you back a little more. Again, just Google things you'd like to see and find out if they're pricey.

Fruit picking is very popular among working tourists but obviously will depend on what season you arrive.

Without knowing your exact plans or itinerary all I can say is Google Google Google! But if you get stuck there'll be someone who can help out here.

First tip: Never hitch hike in Australia. The one thing Australia has is wide open spaces, this you will discover when you come here. Plenty of hitch hikers have disappeared never to be found. (Google "wolf creek" Australian made movie, based on a true story of two female british back packers).
Secondly if you have to travel long distances, use the coach/bus/train/plane services. IE: Bus = Grey hound. Train - www.grs.com.au, Plane = virginblue. Again don't hitch hike.

Meeting other travellers - most likely. Hostels are the way to go. But just be careful who you put trust in.

Cash - Minimum....anyones guess. Australia isn't exactly a cheap holiday destination. $2000 - 3000 Australian would be a good starting point for a 3 month trip. Buy your food wisely. Stay away from restraunts, cafes, etc - all expensive meals. Buy food from the supermarket and make up your own meals - far less cheaper to buy.

Hostels/back packers are cheaper than motels here too.

Why don't you advertise in your local newspaper for a travelling companion. You never know, there could be someone like you wanting to visit Australia too, but doesn't have a travelling companion.

I did it 18 years ago, I'm not the most outgoing person in the world and I did OK. I would say don't start your travels in Sydney but it's up to you.
