G'day L,
Thanks for your question. Given that you already have a car, that would be the way to go. How long have you got? You could go all around Australia in three months but you might not have that long. You might want to do a mini journey Melbourne-Canberra-Sydney-Queensland coast-outback in a month or 6 weeks. Regards |

How long are you here and what time of year? May as well use the car, or some places are really only practical by plane, eg Perth.
In summer you are best to head no further north than Brisbane, and Tasmania is a great option from Melbourne. In winter the north is the place to be. |

Theres just nothing as good as the open road in front of you and the freedom to go. But the petrol will be pricey and then there is accomodation so work out how long you want to travel for and how much you have to spend. Maybe you can take a small tent to ease the accomodation and you will meet up with plenty of travellers on the road but if you are travelling by yourself and you are female be careful. Im sure you will meet plenty of helpful people though. always travel with plenty of water and spare parts. If you decide to go on a tour then I'm sure you will enjoy that as well and meet up with others. Also look at flying to a few places as Virgin has a happy hour between 12 and 1pm and jetstar has friday frenzy between 4 and 8pm on a friday and some bargain fares come up on that.

Depending on how much time you have I would make the trip to Perth. Get a back packer card, vip or similar, and get a cheap rate on the Indian Pacific. Was very cheap although did take 3 days but its an experience you will look back on for a very long time. The east coast is good, the usual Melbourne up to Cairns route is well worn. I would really make it to Uluru (Ayers rock). Its relatively ignored by backpackers but again a great experience. As you have a car, advertise on backpacker websites your routes and will be sure to pick up a like minded travel partner.
