There are lots of online travel boards that can come in very handy in these situations.

I personally was in Argentina a little while ago and assisted in one and found some extremely cool people to travel with. It might help you out as well:

Whatever happens, have fun :)

Join the YHA and when you have password access to their website you can post your own personal ad or reply to one that is already there

Sign up for a BBS like the Thorn Tree or with YHA. Look for people in your own country, preferrably near where you live so you can meet them before you go.

I think there is a website you can check for free rides all over Australia.

needaride.com.au I think itis. Not sure about how popular it is though.

The best friends I made whilst travelling where the ones I made unexpectedly....flatmates and bus companions! You often meet people in the kitchens of hostels etc too! Don't worry too much if you don't have a travel buddy before you go, you might be better without one! At least that way you're free as the wind, the way travelling should be :)

I went to Australia on my own and it doesn't take long to make lots of friends over there. Although you may feel more secure making a travelling buddy before you go, you really don't need to. I have friends that made contacts online and then they were complete weirdos when they met them face to face! Better to meet people when you get there.

I would recommend starting off in one of the big hostels in Sydney or Melbourne (e.g. Wake Up or YHA in Sydney) and plan to stay there for a few days before you start travelling around. Chat to people in the kitchens, TV room, dorm rooms, hostel bar and find out what people's travel plans are - there will be so many single travellers in the same situation as you, keen to make new friends and travel buddies!

Then as you start to travel around you will meet new friends on buses, tours, etc. and before you know it, you will have loads of friends. The great thing about Australia is that everyone follows the same route, and goes to the same places, so it's really easy to meet and keep in touch with people.

Good luck!
