I went to Australia on my own and it doesn't take long to make lots of friends over there. Although you may feel more secure making a travelling buddy before you go, you really don't need to. I have friends that made contacts online and then they were complete weirdos when they met them face to face! Better to meet people when you get there.
I would recommend starting off in one of the big hostels in Sydney or Melbourne (e.g. Wake Up or YHA in Sydney) and plan to stay there for a few days before you start travelling around. Chat to people in the kitchens, TV room, dorm rooms, hostel bar and find out what people's travel plans are - there will be so many single travellers in the same situation as you, keen to make new friends and travel buddies!
Then as you start to travel around you will meet new friends on buses, tours, etc. and before you know it, you will have loads of friends. The great thing about Australia is that everyone follows the same route, and goes to the same places, so it's really easy to meet and keep in touch with people.
Good luck!
