Default Any advice on travelling in Australia?

I really would like to explore Australia, backpacking type thing. Has anyone got any advice - did you set off alone or with friends - are there any companies you would recommend which arrange groups to get together?

Thanks
Hi Kirvana W, can you recommend must see things to do whilst I'm there?

There are some good books you can get (from your local Library if you don't want to buy) ..

The 'Rough Guide' is a good place to start ..

There are also some commercial travel companies that will organise groups - I have used Intrepid (they can be a bit expensive & perhaps not really aimed at the 'backpacker') ..

There must be companies (or even your Student Union ??) that assist 'gap year' students .. .. see what you can find on google ..

hey i did it about 5 years ago and it was amazing.. i spent a lot of time waitressing on trains. i didnt ask for pay but it got me to every destination i wanted to see. and provided me with meals while we were travelling. it was a grat experience. i started off with my friend but she got really home sick and went home.
do loads of reasearch. google backpacking and u will get loads of info about groups etc.
arrange an anustalian sim card to be sent to your home so you have contact with your family as soon as you touch down in oz. make sure you send them a text everyday you can.
and just save.. an emergancy credit card is a good idea.. but only for emergencies... not clothes etc.

I went back in September on my own and loved it

Look up hostels before you go, make sure they can pick you up from the airport (but if you go to Perth, don't go to Planet Inn hostel as it's a hole) I recommend BIG hostel in Sydney as they're friendly and really helpful and it's fairly cheap

Don't go to work as you won't see any of the country and you'll be paid less than you would at home. Most of the people I spoke to out there had been there fore 6 months and I'd seen more in the few weeks I'd been in the country.

Save up before you go (I'm still in debt for it)

Trailfinders booked all of my flights and were really helpful finding the cheapest for me but if you want to get a camper van, look into a company called Wicked as I saw hundreds driving around the place

Make sure you get up to Port Douglas as it has the most beautiful scenery

Most of all, have fun

Hope this helps you and you enjoy your time downunder

Don't walk and be careful about accepting rides.
