There are plenty of things to see and do. Why not include a stay at the Gold Coast (southern Queensland) It is lovely and warm in Summer and pretty mild in winter. There are great theme parks there like Sea World, Movie World, Dream world, Wet amd Wild, You can bungee jump or sling shot bungee. You can hire jet skis and para sail, go on tours. The night life is fantastic. You can get around pretty cheaply and even hire a mini moke (type of small car) or a moped. The beaches are world class and very clean. There is just too much to mention. But if I was back packing that would be one spot I would have to go. Its a great place but my one piece of advice would be to look after your valuables. There are literally hundreds of back packer places there.

If you don't like the heat, then I suggest you travel the bottom end of Australia first as January is our summer in Queensland and it gets quite hot, plus it is our cyclone season and wet season. Then do the top end April, May and June.

Australia has a brilliant network of backpacker hostels located all over the country. Most of them are of good quality (some dodgy ones though) and all are cheap. Once you get to the first one, word of mouth will usually tell you the places to avoid. Hostel common room s and noticeboards are also great sources of friends, drinking and travelling companions and information on places to go, things to see and what work is on offer (if you're on a Working Holiday visa).

The following site has heaps of useful info including good stuff on hostels:

Start in Melbourne in summer (Jan) and travel north, ending in Cairns in winter - it's warm there all year.
