I live in the United States and will be visiting Australia for vacation. I thought I had read you need to apply for a tourist visa and maintain a valid passport. Do I need both? Is this true? Thanks

Well I know that when I went to Europe, a passport sufficed. How long are you staying for? I don't think you need one if you're staying short term, or if you don't plan to work. If you need to update your passport, you may as well ask while you're there, or visit your government site for more information.

You havent mentioned if you are an American citizen or not. If you are, then citizens of your country are eligible for an ETA (electronic Travel Authority). ETA is linked to ur passport and u must travel on the same passport that u use while applying. A fee of $20 applies. ETA cannot be granted in Australia , so u hafta apply for it from USA. I reckon, ETA is granted failrly quickly.
For mor info see http://www.immi.gov.au/visitors/tourist/976/how-the-visa-works.htm and to apply http://www.immi.gov.au/visitors/tourist/976/how-to-apply.htm If you are not a US citizen, you can check if ur passport is eligibile for ETA at http://www.immi.gov.au/visitors/tourist/976/eligibility.htm. If ur passport is not on the list u will hafta apply for a traditional tourist visa, whose approval takes ages, i reckon. |
