australia is a huge place, about the same size as europe or north america.

the weather conditions vary according to the season so the time of year that you come will influence what is the best place to start.

the best place to stay is with friends or with friends of friends. backpacking in australia is popular and there are many hostels. hotels are more expensive but they vary from budget hotels to 5 star plus.

the cost of living is similar to the cost of living in germany. if you have euros, english pounds, japanese yen or us dollars you will not find it too expensive. the actual cost will depend on where you go and what you do.

you will not get a place in the best acting schools. they are highly sought after and have many applicants. many people try for many years before they gain admittance. unless you are a long term resident here you will not get in.

you can do it on your own if you are adventurous and confident enough, many people do.

the lonely planet travel guide for australia is a good resource. you need to do some more research and plan your trip.

Most of your question has been answered by others so the only thing I would like to add is to consider how you will support yourself while in Australia. If you can afford it and don't need to worry about making spending money that's fine just come over on a tourist visa (work is not allowed on this visa) and enjoy yourself as Australia has a lot to offer. If you need to find work while over here you will need to apply for a working holiday visa so you can make some money while enjoying yourself.

You first need accomodation so will have to go to a back packers or motel or hotel then look for shared accomodation in an apartment with others. You will find these advertised in the newspapers. . You can go by your self providing you are allowed to stay in Australia so you will need to make enquiries through immigration

Living costs are hard to say depends on your accomodation price then you may need transport and of course food which is reasonable here.

For basic living:
Food: Normal meal would be A$6-12 per person in fastfood
Rental: If you will be renting a unit/flat you will be looking at maybe A$160-220 per week
You can visit this blog for useful information re settling in Australia: http://orangefeather.blogspot.com/
Public transportation links will be found in the link above

With careful planning traveling by yourself won't be hard. Just make sure you do a thorough research before you travel so you are prepared what to expect.
