I ate at a lot of great restaurants in Austin recently but couldn't tell you the addresses. I was lucky enough to find a local resident who gave me a great tour of the city. I would recommend talking to real people when you get there. If you are staying in a Hotel, don't ask the concierge, ask the valet. Or ask the maid staff. They know the places that serve great food with great prices. We had a dinner for 10 with drinks for 120 and had dessert too at a local Mexican restaurant. For two of us for lunch at a steak place it ran 17 dollars including the meal, two beers and dessert. And we were treated like royalty.
The best people to ask are people in the service industry. They know where you can eat a great meal and get good service on their budgets. And they know the side streets to take to avoid the traffic. You know, I just thought of the name of the restaurant that was Mexican food. I live in Austin. If you want BBQ go to the Stubbs, they have great food and always have live music. Avoid Ruddies, they are overrated. Also try some tex-mex, there are a lot of good ones, the best are Trudies, Chuys, and Baby Acapulco. For great bar food, beer, and sports on A LOT of tvs go to The Tavern. For hip fusion food go to Mars or Uchi. For Thai food go to Madam Mams. For sandwiches go to Katzs deli and bar. For homestyle go to Threadgills. For breakfst or late night food go to Magnolia cafe. For a good cup of joe go to the Spider house. For vegitarian go to Mother cafe and Garden or Veggie heaven. For dessert go to Amys ice cream. For burger joint go to P. Terrys buger stand or Dans.ForIndian go to the Clay Pot. That should get you started. Have fun!
