Austin is incredibly beautiful. It's easily the most beautiful city in Texas. It's mostly safe, though, as anywhere in America, there are places to avoid (namely, the area East of I-35 and North of Town Lake as well as areas around downtown after hours). Use your street smarts wherever you go.
Austin CAN be easy to drive in. The key is finding a job that's near home OR finding a home that is near downtown and a job that's in the 'burbs. Summers are hot, but not unbearable. Winters are short and mild with many gorgeous days in the 60s, 70s and (sometimes) even the 80s. There's not a single month that goes by when you can't wear a t-shirt, shorts and flip flops for AT LEAST a few days. Austin is a very progressive and tolerant/accepting city. Texas' only LEGAL nude beach is in Austin (Hippie Hollow on Lake Travis). There's also a GIGANTIC music scene. Austin is known internationally as the Live Music Capital of the World. This isn't just a tourist brochure slogan. One day, I decided to pick up the local free paper and just do a count of the various spots around town that were listed as having live bands on a particular weekend. I counted well over 400. I did a little internet research and found that on the same weekend, there were only about 200 live music venues in New York City and about 300 in London. Austin truly is the Live Music Capital of the World. |

Traffic sucks. Everything else is fantastic. Austin is the coolest, hottest city in Texas. Cool people, hot summers. Very dry. Artists and musicians thrive there, along with a lot of liberal thinking people. I guess it's about as safe as any big city can be. Just be smart and be very choosy about where you live and hang out. It's in the beautiful hill country so you can just take a drive and feel great.
Note: every year in June there is a huge motorcycle rally. Literally thousands of bikers come from all over the US and camp out. They go to the bars on 6th street and keep the restaurants packed. Please drive carefully! |

Austin is the best, plain and simple. great people, dog friendly, culturally diverse, economically diverse, people don't care who you are and where you come from just as long as you are a nice person, awesome public transportation, lots of things to do outside

I love austin. It got tons of cute little shops full of personality and charm. there is always tons to do. tons of parks and dog parks. 6th street is a blast at night. and there are always events going on.
i've never had any problems with safety, but as in any city i would stay in groups. it can be a little confusing to drive in, at first. downtown has a lot of one way streets. but you get use to it pretty quickly. it's a very down to earth city with lots of character. |
