I am accepted for both for a biology major. I am looking into going into becoming some kind of medical doctor (I don't know what kind yet). And the University of Houston just gave me a $25,000 scholarship, so I am trying to weigh the differences between the two institutions to see if its worth the money.
If you have any advice whatsoever, I would greatly appreciate it. (the following questions are just some suggestions, so answer as many as you like) what are the differences in opportunities from someone that goes to University of Texas vs The University of Houston? (in terms of internships/job opportunities/pay/etc) what are the differences in social life on the campuses? (does University of Houston have an active student body, or is it more of a commuter college?) What are the differences in reputation between the two institutions, and would it effect future opportunities? And anything else you think it might be important. Thanks!!! and the scholarship is extremely easy to maintain - just a 3.0 gpa and i can afford UT without the scholarship |

I go to UT and the opportunities are endless. There are career specialists that can help you find internships for your major and even scholorships. UT was voted one of the best party schools in the nation...enough said ;) but there's also 6th street if you are into the clubbing scene. Social life on campus is very active, many clubs, lots of stuff to do!!

UH! The school is great if you get involved in activities on-campus. Remember, anyone can go to any university and lay low including at UT. About 12% of UH students live on-campus, this is compared to 15% of UT students. It's really not much of a relative difference contrary to popular belief. Of course there are more students at UT (about 50,000 vs UH's 35,000), but the bottom-line is that there are thousands of students that live on-campus at UH. So yes, there is quite a community. It's quite a diverse community at that. U.S. News & World Report ranked UH as the 2nd most diverse university in the United States behind Rutgers. It's easy to find something especially culturally satisfying to get involved with on-campus.
UH is near Downtown Houston, and there is much to do there also. Not to mention, UH has much more lax policies regarding alcohol on-campus, etc. than most other Texas schools. Most times, school sponsored activities serve free alcohol to those of age. Houston is the 4th largest city in the United States. There is much more to do here than in Austin in my opinion. Professional sports teams like the Astros, Rockets, and Texans are great to see. Houston's Major League Soccer team even plays their game on-campus. Houston is also of course, a major tour stop for most major musicians. The Houston Symphony Orchestra, Houston Ballet, and areas like the Houston Museum district, theatre district, etc. are great for enjoying fine arts. There's even the Houston Zoo. By the way, about jobs, internships and scholarship opportunities, yeah...They're at at UH also. There are plenty of people hired by the university for that. It really doesn't make UT special in the least. |
