The first thing you should do is grab an Austin Chronicle or go to www.austinchronicle.com to check out what is going on around town. If you are looking to see a good live show, then I would personally recommend Stubb's, Antone's, La Zona Rosa, The Backyard, or Emo's as they have been true Austin venues for a long time.
If you are interested in club/bar-hopping, you need to check out the 4th and 5th street districts for the crowd you are looking for (more sophisticated, cool , and mature). While 6th street is full of bars, those bars are full of drunk 18-22 year old fraternity boys, sorority girls, and gangsta wannabees.
As for during the day, I would encourage you to stroll around Lady Bird/Town Lake and then hit up some of the local favorites along Lamar - Waterloo Records, Whole Foods, Book People, Cheapos, etc. You may even want to browse/window shop and grab lunch on South Congress. For late afternoon/early evening plans, do yourself a favor and go to The Draught Haus (on Medical Parkway) for great home-brewed pints and FREE bratwurst.
Other area attractions include The Ladybird Wildflower Center (beautiful this time of year), The Bob Bullock State Museum, Zilker Park, and Barton Springs.
Good luck and enjoy your visit!
