Default Considering moving to Austin Texas?

Hello,

I am considering moving to Austin from Milwaukee sometime in early August. I visted the city in March but at best got a general idea.

One general question: this move would only be until August, would it be financially worth it?
*What some decent & well priced areas that one would not need a car to get around in and are safe?
*Is there public transport to suburban or greater metro areas?
* What is the overall cost for a single person concerning: electricity, water/gas, internet, transport, food, and taxes---I noticed that wages weren"t all that great for a recent college grad but at the sametime the cost of living seemed much lower than Milwaukee.
*Considering the state of the economy, how difficult in general would it be to secure a job in finance/call center if I sent several resumes this week?
...and any other advice you might have.

Thank you :)

Be prepared to fight for everything you want here. Nice places to live near the down town area are expensive and cut-throat when trying to land one.

Recently, there was a commuter train built that takes people from some of the suburbs into austin. Making it cheaper to live outside of the city and work in without having to drive.

Wages are low because of the huge amout of college students and graduates in the city. Yet another cut-throat avenue you will have to face as a young professional in this city. (I can speak from experience.)

I am paying $815 for a 900 sq ft apartment in a decent part of town but wouldn't be able to comfortably not have a vehicle. Internet is going to run you around $45 a month for good service, bus is $1 daily, electricity for my place runs at about $200 a month for summer. However, I'm not home much due to working 2 jobs to live comfortably.

If you are willing to drive, there is a Sears call center in Round Rock which is connected to Austin. It is a suburb so there isn't public transport there, but it's just like being in austin in every other way, you'll just have to drive to and fro work.

So, Austin can be an interesting place to live with tons to do and see and ways to grow here, but just be prepared to work for everything! The huge abundance of bums in this town seem to have figured out a way to mooch of EVERYONE, but seeing as how you seem to have your stuff together, I would hope you wouldn't want to be one of them!

Good luck!
